ARTP statement on pulmonary function testing 2020

Abstract: The Association for Respiratory Technology & Physiology (ARTP) last produced a statement on the performance of lung function testing in 1994. At that time the focus was on a practical statement for people working in lung function laboratories. Since that time there have been many technological advances and alterations to best practice in the measurement and interpretation of lung function assessments. In light of these advances an update was warranted. ARTP, therefore, have provided within this doc… Show more

“…Spirometry will evaluate lung function following the Brazilian and international guidelines (28)(29) . The following variables will be considered: forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s, peak expiratory flow, and the average forced expiratory flow between 25% and 75% of the FVC (25%−75%) (30) . The 2007 predicted values by Pereira et al will be used (31) .…”

“…CPET and spirometry data were interpreted by a senior Healthcare Scientist using an evidence based approach [13]. The main outcome variable was peak VO 2 de ned as the highest oxygen uptake (VO 2 ) attained on a rapid incremental test at end-exercise [11]. This is reported in ml.min.kg and as a percentage of the maximal predicted VO 2 (VO 2 max).…”
