Este artigo teve o objetivo de analisar o perfil das indústrias de cerâmica vermelha localizadas no município de Prudentópolis-PR, em relação ao processo de extração e transporte da argila, e sua contribuição para o desenvolvimento local. Para isso, foi realizado um estudo do tipo exploratório-descritivo com abordagem quantitativa, no qual foram investigadas 46 empresas do segmento no município. Os principais resultados apontam que a maioria das indústrias de cerâmica vermelha no município de Prudentópolis-PR atuam há mais de 21 anos e atendem a região e cidades próximas no estado. Essas indústrias se caracterizam como micro e pequenas empresas, com predominância de gestão familiar e há pouca variação e inovação dos itens comercializados. No que tange aos aspectos relacionados ao processo produtivo, observa-se que as empresas realizam a extração da argila no próprio barreiro e/ou de forma terceirizada. As áreas exploradas possuem, em sua maioria, até 10 hectares e se situam, exclusivamente, no próprio município. Pode-se inferir que as indústrias de cerâmica vermelha contribuem com o desenvolvimento local a partir da geração de impostos, criação de emprego e renda, favorecendo a melhoria da qualidade de vida da população. No entanto, o segmento ainda requer melhorias na gestão e inovação tecnológica para tornar as indústrias mais competitivas. Além disso, parcerias com a gestão municipal são necessárias para ampliar os impactos da atividade no desenvolvimento local.

Key Processes for the Energy Use of Biomass in Rural Sectors of Latin America

An alternative to mitigate the consumption of fossil fuels is the use of biomass as an energy source. In this sense, the rural sector in Latin America has great potential due to its multiple biomass sources. For this reason, this study aims to analyze potential technologies related to the production of energy from biomass and its application in the Latin American rural sector. To achieve this, four key processes are analyzed. First is biomass conditioning through solar dryers. Next are the thermochemical processes that allow for their transformation into biofuels, for which the pyrolysis and the hydrothermal methods were selected due to the flexibility of the products obtained. Subsequently, cogeneration is studied to produce electrical and thermal energy from biomass or its derivatives. Finally, to close the CO2 cycle, a balance of CO2 fixation in a forest plantation is presented as an example of carbon accumulated in biomass. The literature systematic review allowed us to determine that the technologies mentioned in this work have different degrees of implementation in the Latin American rural sector. However, they have great potential to be applied on a large scale in the region, making it possible to adapt energy production to climate change and improve the life quality of its inhabitants.

In Pakistan raw coal and a little quantity of waste plastics are burnt to sustain high temperature inside brick making kilns. The gaseous emissions of the kilns contain a considerable amount of darkish colored particulates. It is currently believed that the plastic burning produces these particulates. Advanced characterization instruments, such as a scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffractometer, surface area analyzer using nitrogen gas adsorption isotherms, and thermogravimetric analyzer, were used to find out the chemistry and physics of the particulates. At a magnification of 30,000x, the SEM picture shows masses that are roughly roundish in shape and their size is in between 0.1 to 0.5 microns. The elements detected in these particles are carbon, oxygen, and sulfur (EDS analysis), or in other words, these elements are a typical composition of raw coal. This elemental analysis suggest that fine coal particles come out with usual combustion gases and these emitted particulates are not plastic combustion product. To strengthen this finding, the sample when calcined discarded a significant amount of sulphur oxides species, as determined in the XRF study by noticing a considerable decrease of sulphur content in the calcined particles, suggesting that the particles are actually a coal. The N2 isotherm graph reveals that the light weight flying coal particles has a very low surface area. Additionally, the XRD and TGA studies supports the conclusion that these dark colored particulate emissions are primarily fine coal particles (cenosphere).
