Artificial Intelligence–Aided Precision Medicine for COVID-19: Strategic Areas of Research and Development

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies can play a key role in preventing, detecting, and monitoring epidemics. In this paper, we provide an overview of the recently published literature on the COVID-19 pandemic in four strategic areas: (1) triage, diagnosis, and risk prediction; (2) drug repurposing and development; (3) pharmacogenomics and vaccines; and (4) mining of the medical literature. We highlight how AI-powered health care can enable public health systems to efficiently handle future outbreaks and i… Show more

“…Multiple informatic approaches have been applied to the integration of population level, molecular and imaging data associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. These include conventional interactome networks, associations with abundance trajectories with viral proteins, neural networks, deep and self-supervised learning, as well as machine learning of digital data [8,10,[16][17][18][19][20]. Each type of informatic approach has its advantages and disadvantages based on a priori knowledge, power and structure of the dataset, as well as the ability to develop de novo knowledge.…”

“…Automating data throughput in biomedical and clinical applications may also be useful even for relatively low demand tasks under certain circumstances; for example, automated RT-PCR data processing as implemented in (Automated RT-PCR analysis) turned out to be crucial for testing efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic ( 206 ). AI/ML modeling based on facilitated access data may indeed become a key tool to tackle with current and future pandemics ( 207 ).…”

“…Nevertheless, this can be overcome by the use of more sophisticated diagnostic tools with superior sensitivity. In addition, using artificial intelligence we will be able to predict the optimum drug and doses required for a patient for a better effective outcome [ 76 ].…”
