Abstract: We present a case that used argon plasma coagulation (APC) for the healing of bronchopleural fistulas (BPF), which most probably developed secondary to tracheobronchial anastomotic failure (TBAF). We aimed to show this procedure as an alternative treatment for the small fistulas that could develop after pneumonectomy. In a 56-year old male patient, right upper lobe squamous cell carcinoma was detected in 2009. Sleeve pneumonectomy was done because of the carina and major fissure invasion. There was no morbidit… Show more

“…As previously proposed in some cases with ablative Argon Plasma Coagulation (APC) [19], removing the mucosal wall of the fistula seems interesting to promote healing. The advantage of ESD is a controlled and complete mucosal ablation compared to APC.…”

“…In these cases, combined approaches with both mucosal ablation and mechanical closure of the fistulous tract are mandatory. As previously proposed in some cases with ablative argon plasma coagulation (APC) 19 , removal of the mucosal wall of the fistula seems to be a promising method of promoting healing. However, the advantage of ESD over APC is controlled and complete mucosal ablation.…”

“…Different from formers, thermal energy could also be used to treat air leaks. Aynaci et al reported a successful elimination of air leak by using argon plasma coagulation (APC) which cauterized the area around two BPFs of 1 and 3 mm diameter [ 65 ].…”

“…Closure of a fistula tract using APC was previously described in a patient with a BPF, and the selection of this method was similarly based on the small diameter of the fistula. 3 …”
