Background/Objective: Platelets are involved in mechanisms that promote tumor growth. Platelet indices are marker of platelet activities in cancer. Platelet indices includes: mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), Plateletocrit (PCT), Platelet large cell ratio (P-LCR). This study aims to evaluate platelet count and platelet indices at different stages of women breast cancer in Yola. Materials and Methods:143 women participated in this study. Platelet count and platelet indices were determined using Sysmex XP 300 hematology analyzer.Results: Mean platelet count in women with stage 0/1, 2, and 3/4, was 207±23.09 x 109/l, 113± 14.58 x 109/l and 412±12.50 x 109/l respectively. While mean PDW in women with stage 0/1, 2, and 3/4, breast cancer was 11.9 ±0.21fl, 13.1 ±1.1fl and 12.1 ±0.30fl respectively. MPV of women with stage 0/1, 2, and 3/4, breast cancer was 12.0 ± 1.20fl, 13.9 ± 0.26fl and 14.4 ± 0.08fl respectively. The mean P-LCR of women with stage 0/1 breast cancer was 32.4 ± 0.88% while P-LCR of those with stage 2 and 3/4 breast cancers was 21.8 ± 1.64% and 19.3 ± 1.13% respectively. Mean PCT of women on stage 0/1, 2, 3/4 was 0.23 ± 0.13%, 0.12 ± 1.02% and 0.29 ± 0.20% respectively. Conclusion:Platelet counts and platelet indices vary with stages of breast cancer. Pattern of MPV variations indicates that MPV can be used as indices to measure platelet activation, tumor metastasis/invasion and inflammatory processes in women with breast cancer in Yola Nigeria.

Significant alterations are seen in hemostatic system during normal pregnancy and puerperium. Overall, it is a state of hypercoagulability and hypofibrinolysis mitigating the risk of severe bleeding during placental separation at delivery. On the flip side, it threatens a pregnant woman for thrombosis with the risk being four to six folds more in comparison to a non-pregnant woman. It is important to understand the hemostatic changes in normal pregnancy by all health care providers who manage pregnant women in obstetric wards, trauma, anesthesia and other circumstances. This review describes the changes in qualitative and quantitative changes in platelet, clotting factors, anticoagulants and fibrinolysis during normal pregnancy and puerperium.

ÖzAmaç: Üst gastrointestinal sistem (GİS) kanamaları sık görülen ve riskli lezyonlarda cerrahi gerektirebilen ve mortalite ile sonuçlanabilen bir durumdur. Bu çalışmada GİS kanamalı hastalarda, trombosit fonksiyonu ve aktivasyonunun bir göstergesi olan ortalama trombosit hacminin (OTH) kanama ciddiyeti ile ilişkisinin araştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Çalışma için Mallory-Weis yırtığı ve riskli mide veya duodenum ülserine bağlı üst GİS kanama tanısı ile takip edilerek endoskopik olarak epinefrin injeksiyonu ile birlikte heater prob koagulasyon (HPC) ya da argon plazma koagulasyon (APC) uygulanan toplam 97 hasta retrospektif olarak incelendi. Hastalar ortanca OTH değerine göre endoskopik tedavinin başarısı, kanama rekürrensi, cerrahi tedavi gereksinimi, ortalama transfüzyon ihtiyacı ve hastanede yatış süreleri açısından karşılaştırıdı. Bulgular: Çalışmaya alınan hastaların medyan OTH değeri 8,3 fL idi. OTH hastaların 52'sinde (%53) medyan değerin altında, 45'unda (%47) ise üstündeydi. OTH medyan değerin altında ve üs-tünde kalan hastalar arasında başlangıç hemostazın sağlanması (sırasıyla %100 ve %96, p>0.05), ortalama transfüzyon ihtiyacı (sırasıyla 3,5 ± 2,25 ve 3,66 ± 2,77 ünite, p>0.05) , ortalama hastanede kalış süresi (sırasıyla 5,1 ± 3,05 ve4,89 ± 2,33 gün, p>0.05), tekrar kanama oranı (sırasıyla %15 ve %20, p>0.05)ve cerrahi tedavi gereksinimi (sırasıyla %6 ve %4, p>0.05) açısından anlamlı farklılık saptanmadı. Sonuç: Mallory-Weis yırtığı ve riskli mide veya duodenum ülserine bağlı üst GİS kanaması olan hastalarda OTH kanamanın ciddiyeti ile ilişkili bulunmamıştır. The present study aimed to investigate the association with severity of bleeding and mean platelet volume (MPV) as an indicator of platelet function and activation, in patients with upper GI bleeding.. Material and Methods: A total of 97 patients diagnosed with upper GI bleeding secondary to Mallory-Weiss tear and high-risk gastric or duodenal ulcer and who underwent endoscopic treatment with epinephrine injection plus heater prob coagulation or argon plasma coagulation were analyzed retrospectively. Patients were compared according the median MPV levels, in terms of initial hemostasis, mean transfusion count and duration of hospital stay, recurrent bleeding rates and need for surgery. results: Median MPV level was 8.3 fL in enrolled patients. MPV was lower than the median level in 52 (53%) patients and higher in 45 (47%) patients.
