Aqueous outflow - A continuum from trabecular meshwork to episcleral veins

Abstract: In glaucoma, lowered intraocular pressure (IOP) confers neuroprotection. Elevated IOP characterizes glaucoma and arises from impaired aqueous humor (AH) outflow. Increased resistance in the trabecular meshwork (TM), a filter-like structure essential to regulate AH outflow, may result in the impaired outflow. Flow through the 360° circumference of TM structures may be non-uniform, divided into high and low flow regions, termed as segmental. After flowing through the TM, AH enters Schlemm’s canal (SC), which exp… Show more

“…Thus, it will be important to investigate the regulation of Schlemm's canal permeability in future studies. 65 Another limitation was that it was impossible for us to investigate ATX expression in specimens from healthy controls under the same condition with glaucoma specimens. Instead, we collected control specimens from donor eyes from a different ethnic group; therefore, we have to be careful in interpreting the results from the present study, which should be clarified in future studies.…”

“…Although there is evidence that additional downstream elements exist [3], the trabecular meshwork (TM) is regarded as the principal pathology [4]. The difference amongst such microincisional glaucoma surgeries (MIGS) is the method of TM removal and how the anterior chamber is maintained.…”
