Medicago lupulina is an ancient edible plant from the Fabaceae family. In this work, two eco-friendly methods for extraction of bioactive phenolics from M. lupulina were developed using mixtures of water with two non-toxic, skin- and environmentally-friendly polyol solvents: glycerol and polypropylene glycol. Ultrasound-assisted extractions were optimized using a Box–Behnken design. The independent variables were the concentration of organic solvent in water (X1), extraction temperature (X2) and time (X3), while the response was phenolic content. The optimum conditions for extraction of polyphenols were (X1, X2, X3): (45%, 70 °C, 60 min) and (10%, 80 °C, 60 min) for glycerol and polypropylene glycol extraction, respectively. The extracts prepared at optimum conditions were rich in phenolic compounds, mainly derivatives of apigenin, kaempferol, luteolin, quercetin, caffeic and ferulic acid, as well as coumestrol. Their cosmeceutical and antidiabetic activity was tested. Both extracts demonstrated notable antioxidant, anti-lipoxygenase and anti-α-amylase activity. In addition to those activities, the glycerol extract efficiently inhibited protein coagulation, elastase and α-glucosidase activity. Glycerol present in the extract displayed enzyme-inhibiting activity in several assays and supported the action of the bioactive constituents. Thus, the optimized glycerol extract is a desirable candidate for direct incorporation in antidiabetic food supplements and cosmeceutical products.

Diverse and abundant applications of the eutectic solvents have appeared in the last years. Their promising tunable properties, eco-friendly character and the possibility of being prepared from numerous compounds have led to the publication of numerous papers addressing their use in different areas. Terpenes and terpenoids have been employed in the formulation of eutectic solvents, though they also have been applied as solvents in extraction processes. For their hydrophobic nature, renewable character, low environmental impact, cost and being non-hazardous, they have also been proposed as possible substitutes of conventional solvents in the separation of organic compounds from aqueous streams, similarly to hydrophobic eutectic solvents. The present work reviews the application of eutectic solvents in liquid–liquid extraction and terpenes and terpenoids in extraction processes. It has been made a research in the current state-of-the-art in these fields, describing the proposed applications of the solvents. It has been highlighted the scale-up feasibility, solvent regeneration and reuse procedures and the comparison of the performance of eutectic solvents, terpenes and terpenoids in extraction with conventional organic solvents or ionic liquids. Ultimately, it has been also discussed the employ of predictive methods in extraction, the reliability of thermodynamic models in correlation of liquid–liquid equilibria and simulation of liquid–liquid extraction processes.

Morphology Modulation of Ionic Surfactant Micelles in Ternary Deep Eutectic Solvents

Deep eutectic solvents (DES) are potentially greener solvents obtained through the complexation of simple precursors which, among other applications, have been investigated in recent years for their ability to support the self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules. It is crucial to understand the factors which influence surfactant solubility and self-assembly with respect to the interaction of the surfactant molecule with the DES components. In this work, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) has been used to investigate the micellization of cationic (C n TAB) and anionic (SDS) surfactants in a ternary DES comprising choline chloride, urea, and glycerol, where the hydrogen bond donors are mixed in varying molar ratios. The results show that in each case either globular or rodlike micelles are formed with the degree of elongation being directly dependent on the composition of the DES. It is hypothesized that this composition dependence arises largely from the poor solubility of the counterions in the DES, especially at low glycerol content, leading to a tighter binding of the counterion to the micelle surface and giving rise to micelles with a high aspect ratio. This potential for accurate control over micelle morphology presents unique opportunities for rheology control or to develop templated syntheses of porous materials in DES, utilizing the solvent composition to tailor micelle shape and size, and hence the pore structure of the resulting material.
