Protected areas have been used worldwide to conserve natural resources. Nevertheless, economic activities to provide income for communities living within and surrounded by conservation areas remain an issue. This study aimed to assess the sustainability of a Deuterodon iguape hatchery, situated within an Atlantic Rainforest Park, to leverage grow-out farming of this small native fish, affording income and food security for local families. We have used a set of indicators of economic, social, and environmental sustainability. The initial investment is about US$ 40,000, which should see a return in ~2 years. The internal rate of return is close to 50%, including the externality costs, which is attractive for both public and private investors. The hatchery generated few direct jobs, but the workforce can be recruited from the community, and the hatchery can enable the establishment of several small grow-out farms, leveraging the development of indirect jobs and self-employment. The system had a low environmental impact, showing a minor release of pollutants, a low risk for biodiversity, and absorption of 18 g of CO2 equivalent per thousand post-larvae produced, contributing to the struggle against climate change. Therefore, the D. iguape hatchery demonstrates the potential of combining biodiversity conservation and income generation, meeting the Sustainable Development Goals of Agenda 2030.

Esta publicação traz alguns estudos apresentados em quatro capítulos, I. Viabilidade econômica do cultivo de tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) em tanques escavados abastecidos com e sem bombeamento; II. Viabilidade econômica do cultivo de tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) em relação a outras atividades agropecuárias no estado de Rondônia; III. Caracterização limnológica do ciclo de cultivo do pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) em viveiro escavado na Amazônia Ocidental; e Inovações nos aspectos produtivos do pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) cultivado na Amazônia Ocidental. Este livro cumpre os objetivos de analisar a viabilidade econômica da implantação e manutenção do cultivo de tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) em diferentes modelos de produção. E também, demonstrar a viabilidade econômica da piscicultura na criação de tambaqui, em comparação a outras atividades agropecuárias, usando a taxa interna de retorno (TIR), Payback e rentabilidade para identificar qual atividade é mais viável, apresentando uma análise das vantagens e desvantagens da piscicultura. Outro objetivo alcançado foi caracterizar a qualidade da água em um ciclo de cultivo do pirarucu (Arapaima gigas). Bem como relatar pesquisas sobre as inovações na criação de pirarucu na Amazônia.

First report of Crassiphiala sp. (Trematoda: Diplostomidae) as an etiological agent of black spot disease in commercial ornamental fish from Brazil

Ornamental sh are becoming increasingly popular, but the lack of knowledge regarding their various diseases is a major challenge. Skin diseases commonly found in freshwater sh include black spot disease (BSD), which is characterized by melanin deposits around the metacercariae of some trematode species. Since BSD remains poorly understood, this study describes an outbreak of BSD in Etroplus maculatus raised in outdoor ponds at a Brazilian sh farm. Metacercariae samples were collected, examined, and subjected to molecular phylogenetic analysis. The parasites were conspeci c to an unnamed species, Crassiphiala lineage 5, recently found in Brazilian birds (Megaceryle torquata). Sequences obtained for longifurcate cercariae of the planorbid snail Biomphalaria straminea from the same region were identical to our metacercariae of Crassiphiala sp. These results suggest that Biompahalaria snails are likely an intermediate host of this parasite on farms where E. maculatus was found to be infected. We provide the rst molecular evidence that Crassiphiala are the causative agents of BSD in sh from Brazil. Combatting snails and preventing access of sh-eating birds to outdoor ponds are strategies to control this disease in ornamental sh farms.
