Applying sequence methods to the study of team temporal dynamics

Abstract: In this paper, we explain how structuring, characterizing, and analyzing team experience in terms of temporal sequences can yield new insights about the dynamic nature of teams. We suggest that sequence methods can offer a fuller representation of team temporal dynamics than is typically possible with cross-sectional or longitudinal multiphase designs alone. We provide suggestions for how to use sequence methods to develop teams research questions and conduct sequence analysis. To make our suggestions more con… Show more

“…To identify such patterns, we rely on lag sequential analysis, an innovative approach that is particularly suitable for capturing dynamic group processes (Herndon & Lewis, 2015). Sequential analysis allows us to quantify meaningful behavioral transitions or sequences.…”

“…Methodological advances in team research have attempted to remedy such issues by incorporating the notion of process through analyzing temporal events. Recent studies have proposed using sequence methods for analyzing team trajectories (Herndon & Lewis, ) and determining behavioral propensities based on patterns of events (Leenders, Contractor, & DeChurch, ; Pilny, Schecter, Poole, & Contractor, ). Leenders et al () specifically delineate the advantages of using such an approach, arguing that methods built on bottom‐up emergence eliminate many of the assumptions inherent in prior team research.…”
