Applications of Ceramic/Graphene Composites and Hybrids

Abstract: Research activity on ceramic/graphene composites and hybrids has increased dramatically in the last decade. In this review, we provide an overview of recent contributions involving ceramics, graphene, and graphene-related materials (GRM, i.e., graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, and graphene nanoplatelets) with a primary focus on applications. We have adopted a broad scope of the term ceramics, therefore including some applications of GRM with certain metal oxides and cement-based matrices in the review. A… Show more

“…The attractiveness of the development of these applications is attributed to the natural abundance of graphite source, graphene extraordinary electrical and thermal conductivity, high surface area and dimensionality, making it a second phase more than appropriate for mixing with nanomaterials and maximizing their properties. Extended information in reference to the multiple applications of ceramics containing graphene-based materials has been published recently in two reviews [ 58 , 93 ] describing key processing steps and relevant achievements for each field.…”

“…Both graphene and CNTs have been widely used in composites [40]; they have been tested as fillers in many types of matrices, including polymers [39,41], metals [42], and ceramics [43]. Polymer composites were actually the first major area in which CNTs and graphene found commercial applications.…”

“…Both nanomaterials have been used to enhance mechanical properties [44], improve thermal stability [45], decrease flammability [46,47], introduce electrical and thermal conductivity [39], and much more [48]. The applications of these composites include strong and lightweight construction materials [43], electromagnetic shielding [49], antistatic surfaces [50], sensors [51], components such as supercapacitors, etc. [52].…”

“…In most of these applications, the 2D structured graphene nanosheets are necessary to be combined with bulk materials such as polymers, ceramics, or metals. Consequently, they form, for example, by mixing applicable composites or by deposition or printing modified surfaces of layered 3D devices [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ].…”
