Tectonics modify the base-level of rivers and result in the progressive erosion of landscapes. We propose here a new method to classify landscapes according to their erosional stages. This method is based on the combination of two DEM-based geomorphic indices: the hypsometric integral, which highlights elevated surfaces, and surface roughness, which increases with the topographic elevation and the incision by the drainage network. The combination of these two indices allows one to produce a map of erosional discontinuities that can be easily compared with the known structural framework. In addition, this method can be easily implemented (e.g., in MATLAB) and provides a quick way to analyze regional-scale landscapes. We propose here an example of a region where this approach becomes extremely valuable: the Ore Mountains and adjacent regions. The lack of young stratigraphic markers prevents a detailed analysis of recent fault activity. However, discontinuities in mapped geomorphic indices coupled to the analysis of river longitudinal profiles suggest a tight relationship between erosional discontinuities and main tectonic lineaments.Remote Sens. 2014, 6 7972

Resumo:Este artigo investiga a evolução de vales em zona morfoclimática subtropical úmida, no rebordo da Bacia do Paraná, no estado de Santa de Catarina por meio de: i) descrições e observações de campo a respeito da morfologia dos vales; ii) medição da direção de fraturas em afloramentos e iii) levantamento de informações sobre extensão, orientação, elevação média dos vales em produtos de sensoriamento remoto (imagens Landsat e dados SRTM). Os resultados obtidos indicam que, na área do rebordo da Bacia do Paraná em Santa Catarina, a dissecação é comandada pela rede de drenagem a partir dos afluentes dos rios: i) Canoas e Peixe (afluentes do rio Uruguai), a sudoeste e ii) Itajaí-Açú, a leste. A rede de drenagem se caracteriza por exibir dois tipos de vales frequentemente: i) vales em 'V' profundos, sem planície de inundação, onde geralmente os rios correm diretamente sobre as rochas e; ii) vales de fundo chato, planos e com amplas áreas inundáveis (vales muito abertos). ABSTRACT:The aim of this research is to detect the neotectonic activity and to map the seismic risk potential in the plain of Kasserine using the longitudinal profile of the Htab River and its tributaries. The adapted methodological approach is based on the extraction of the longitudinal profile and knickpoints, which are the main source of seismicity information in a plain filled up with more than 1000 m of silty deposit. In such a plain, compact structures are absent and thus we cannot detect the ordinary tectonic indices. The selected longitudinal profiles of the tributaries of the Htab River, extracted along the plain, show normal forms like river 1, 12 and 14 and abnormal ones such as 3, 5 and 7. The knickpoints distribution shows two main alignments trending NW-SE. The first one is in Semmama Mountain and it is represented in the structural map of Kasserine whereas, the second one is located in the plain of Kasserine and we think that it is caused by neotectonic activity. To confirm this hypothesis we use seismic records of the National Meteorology Institute since 2000. These data show seismic activity in the plain which is also a witness of a NW-SE alignment. Moreover, in situ investigations are performed and results pinpoint normal fault activity in the plain. Knickpoints, seismic records, and in situ investigation emphasize significant neotectonic activity affecting the thick quaternary plain of Kasserine.
