Applicability of SWMM for semi Urban Catchment Flood modeling using extreme Rainfall Events

Abstract: Urban floods are different type of flooding event as compared to normally occurring riverine floods which is very often seen along the river banks during heavy rainfall in monsoons. Continuous human interventions in natural vegetative land for rapid Urbanization activities has given rise to Urban Flooding. So, there is a need for capacity analysis of existing storm networks and identification of overflow locations is the need of the study. Hence, in the present study an attempt has been made to simulate Urban … Show more

“…The main application fields and directions are: urban drainage system planning, low-impact development research (LID) and water quality simulation, etc. SWMM contains a pipeline network convergence module, so it is often used for simulation drainage system, which is widely used in storm and flood simulation research [7][8][9] . The groundwater module was added to the SWMM model in 1988, making it applicable to rural areas.…”

“…The storm water management model (SWMM) has been widely used to study the rainfall runoff of a catchment around the world, including in Europe, North America [44] Asia [45][46][47] and the Middle East [48]. In Beijing, SWMM has been used to study rainfall runoff, optimal management practices, low-impact development, and sponge cities, in addition to other things [7,46,[49][50][51][52].…”

“…For computing runoff rate from rainfall, Soil Conservation Service (SCS) curve number (CN) method also can be used [19]. ArcGIS based modeling with the help of Digital Elevation Model, Contour map model was simulated for Krishna Delta Andhra Pradesh [20]. Another attempt was made to estimate the flood and surface runoff with real time through GIS and Remote sensing for Krishna river, here discharge of flood from daily runoff is calculated by depth of runoff obtained from the SCS method [21].…”
