Appearance of bulk superconductivity under hydrostatic pressure in Sr0.5RE0.5FBiS2 (RE = Ce, Nd, Pr, and Sm) compounds

Abstract: We report the appearance of superconductivity under hydrostatic pressure (0-2.5GPa) in Sr 0.5 RE 0.5 FBiS 2 with RE=Ce, Nd, Pr and Sm. The studied compounds, being synthesized by solid state reaction route, are crystallized in tetragonal P4/nmm space group. At ambient pressure, though the RE=Ce exhibits the onset of superconductivity below 2.7K, the Nd, Pr and Sm samples are not superconducting down to 2K. With application of hydrostatic pressure (up to 2.5GPa), superconducting transition temperature (T c ) is… Show more

“…Broadly categorising, these superconducting materials comprise the families Bi-O-S (Tc = 4.5-6 K) [1][2][3][4][5] , LnO1−xFxBiS2 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm and Yb) (Tc = 1.9-5.4 K) [6][7][8][9][10][11][12] , and Sr1−xLnxFBiS2 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd and Sm) (Tc ~ 3 K) [13][14][15][16][17] . “…In this * Electronic address: zhuxiyu@nju.edu.cn, hhwen@nju.edu.cn newly found BiS 2 family, high pressure has been recognized as an important tool to enhance both the superconductivity volume and transition temperatures except for Bi 4 O 4 S 3 [22][23][24][25][26][27][28]. In particular, the SC transition temperature of REO 1−x F x BiS 2 (RE=La, Ce, Nd, Pr) [22][23][24] and Sr 1−x RE x FBiS 2 (RE = La, Ce, Nd, Pr, Sm) [25,28] systems was enhanced tremendously by applying the hydrostatic pressure. Taking LaO 0.5 F 0.5 BiS 2 as an example, the T c of the sample can be increased from about 2 K under ambient pressure to ∼ 10 K under 2 GPa [22].…”

“…The R 2 O 2 layer can be replaced by the Sr 2 F 2 or Eu 2 F 2 layer, as depicted in Figure 1c [25][26][27][28]. The SrFBiS 2 compound is a band insulator and superconductivity can be induced by electron doping as well as LaOBiS 2 .…”
