Aphid Species and Population Dynamics Associated with Strawberry

Abstract: Aphids are among the major pests associated with strawberries in Southern Brasil. In this study, we identified the main species that occur in strawberry fields in the states of Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. We also compared the effectiveness of different sampling methods and studied the population dynamics of aphid species during two strawberry crop cycles in the municipality of Pinhais, state of Paraná, Brasil. Chaetosiphon fragaefolii (Cockerell) and Aphis forbesi Weed were the main species associate… Show more

“…Aphids are important worldwide pests of strawberries, Fragaria x ananassa Duchesne (Rosales: Rosaceae) (Rabasse et al 2001, Thompson et al 2003, Rondon et al 2005. In Argentina and other countries (Cross et al 2001, Bernardi et al 2013 (SMoV). The latter is also transmitted by A. gossypii (Krczal 1982, Martin and Tzanetakis 2006, Tzanetakis and Martin 2013, Dughetti et al 2017.…”

“…The Aphis forbesi Weed, commonly known as the root aphid is native to North America (Blackman and Eastop, 2006), it is an aphid pest affecting strawberry crops (Passos et al, 2000;Cédola and Greco, 2010;Araujo et al, 2013;Bernardi et al, 2013;Zawadneak et al, 2014). A. forbesi is also reported as a vector of the strawberry crinkle virus (Babovic and Krczal, 1976).…”

“…A. forbesi is also reported as a vector of the strawberry crinkle virus (Babovic and Krczal, 1976). This aphid species is easily recognised because it forms colonies in the crown and petioles of strawberry plants (Bernardi et al, 2013;Zawadneak et al, 2014). It can also be associated with ants (Solenopsis sp.…”

“…Monitoring methods should be selected based on their applicability and the reproducibility of results (degrande et al 2003), including their ability to provide fast and accurate estimations of arthropod populations, which can aid in timely decision-making concerning pest control methods. Furthermore, there is currently no consolidated monitoring method to adequately assess arthropod diversity in strawberries (Bernardi et al 2013).…”
