Antioxidant Stability Testing On Liquid And Powder Eichhornia Crassipes Extract

Abstract: Water hyacinth or Eicchornia crassipes is a free-floating aquatic plant and is easily found in swamps or rivers. The rapid growth of water hyacinth can disrupt the aquatic environment, thus water hyacinth is categorized as one of the world’s worst weed. The challenge is not on how to eliminate the number of this weed, but on how to take advantage by the presence of this water plant. Water hyacinth is known to contain high phenolic content and antioxidant activity. Water hyacinth was extracted using 96% ethanol… Show more

“…Tyagi and Agarwal determined the antioxidant potential, total polyphenols, and flavonoids of E. crassipes from methanolic extracts of various sections of plants and demonstrated their therapeutic and pharmaceutical values [ 29 ]. According to Nugriani et al, the powdered preparation of E. crassipes displayed higher TPC and antioxidant properties with a proportion of 1:2 than the various liquid extracts [ 30 ].…”

“…The powder extract samples used in the toxicity analysis at IMERI Laboratory were variated based on the extraction temperature of WH leaves and storage temperature. In order to produce the powder extract, the liquid extract were spray-dried, using encapsulating agents (equal mixture of maltodextrin and Arabic gum) with mass ratio of 1:1 of the total soluble solids (TSS) to total mass of encapsulating agents [3].…”

“…The extraction process to extract the antioxidant content from WH powder will use a mixture of 96% ethanol and water in a 1:1 ratio by weight [3] at a temperature of 50℃ with constant stirring for 3 hours. The extracted solution will then be dried by means of spray drying to remove the remaining solvent.…”
