Antinociceptive activity of Euadenia trifoliolata (Schum. & Thonn.) Oliv. leaves and roots in mice

Abstract: The leaves and roots of Euadenia trifoliolata are used in Nigeria traditional medicine for the treatment of ear ache, head ache and inflammation. The aim of the study was to evaluate the antinociceptive activity of ethanolic extract of the leaves (EL) and roots (ER) of E. trifoliolata in mice. Oral toxicity testing was performed using OECD guidelines. Antinociceptive effect was studied in mice using acetic acid-induced writhing, formalin, tail immersion and hot plate tests. Total polyphenolic contents were det… Show more

“…inhibit both phases of the formalin test, whereas peripherally acting drugs (i.e., NSAIDs such as such as aspirin, diclofenac sodium, indomethacin, dexamethasone, etc.) inhibit only the late phase [ 49 ]. Results of the present study show that the plant extract produced antinociception against both the neurogenic and inflammatory phase of formalin induction.…”

“…This finding has a substantial value not only because it provides scientific evidence for the traditional use of CP extract in pain management but also because it lays a platform to discover potential bioactive compounds with greater analgesic efficacy and lesser side effects. Consequently, several studies have been done to assess the preclinical analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of medicinal plants used in traditional medicine, including Nymphaea lotus leaves, 30 Beridelia retusa bark, 31 Euadenia trifoliolata leaves, 32 Chlorophytum alismifolium tubers, 33 , and Piper longum fruits,. 34 …”

“…The plant material consisted of cuttings from four areas (Adzopé, Banco, Ehotilé Island and Marahoué), which constituted four populations of Euadenia trifoliolata (Schum & Thonn) Oliv (Capparaceae). Four hundred young and old cuttings with external and internal diameters respectively between intervals [1,22] cm and [1,20] cm were used. Their length was 10.5 cm.…”

“…The first group had its upper surface in contact with ambient air when the upper surface of the second group and the eration of medicinal plants are still limited. This is the case of Euadenia trifoliolata (Capparaceae), a medicinal plant used in the pharmacopoeia to treat otitis, anemia, respiratory diseases, male and female fertility disorders and especially as an aphrodisiac [19][20][21]. In fact, E. trifoliolata is overexploited for its medical properties and is becoming more and more rare.…”
