The aim of this research was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the muscle wall extracts of sea cucumber, Stichopus horrens, against Lactococcus garvieae, Streptococcus iniae, Aeromonas hydrophila, and Yersinia ruckeri bacteria in rainbow trout using the disk-diffusion and well-diffusion methods. In this study, nine sea cucumbers (with the mean weight of 1690 ± 12.18 g) were randomly obtained from two locations in Chabahar Bay, Iran in November 2018. The muscle wall of the body was extracted with each of the ethyl acetate, methanol, and acetone organic solvents. The antibacterial activities of extracts were determined. Only the ethyl acetate extracts of S. horrens in the concentrations at 8 and 12 mg/mL had an inhibitory effect on all the examined bacteria. Y. ruckeri and A .hydrophila bacteria were sensitive to the acetone extracts. The best property was recorded with the S.horrens ethyl acetate extracts, with the MIC value of 0.625 mg/mL against S. iniae and L. garvieae. The MIC values ranging from 0.626 to 1.25 mg/mL were also displayed with the acetone extracts against Y. ruckeri and A. hydrophila, respectively. In conclusion, the ethyl acetate extracts of S. horrens displayed the best spectrum of bactericidal effect obtained from four bacteria strains examined.

Pharmaceutical industries now recognize the vast variety of ocean organisms, each possessing distinct biological characteristics. Sea hares, for example, are marine organisms that use bioactive chemicals to defend against predators, including their eggs. To explore the potential antibacterial properties of sea hare species (Dolabella auricularia) found in Pujada Bay, Philippines, egg strings were collected and extracted using hexane and methanol solvents. The antibacterial activity of each fraction was then determined through Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) testing against four potentially pathogenic bacteria, two gram-positive strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis) and two gram-negative strains (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa). The broth microdilution method was employed to assess the antibacterial activity of Dolabella auricularia egg strings. The results revealed the MIC values for the four bacterial strains. The hexane extracts of both extract 1 and extract 2 exhibited a MIC of 0. 23 and 0.33 mg/mL and a MIC of 0.52 and 0.125 mg/mL against P. aeruginosa, respectively. The methanolic extracts (1 and 2) displayed a MIC of 1.46 and 2.83 mg/mL against E. coli and an even more potent MIC of 1.33 and 0.79 mg/mL against P. aeruginosa. In the case of B. subtilis, the hexane extracts (1 and 2) had a MIC of 1.5 and 0.54 mg/mL, while the methanolic extracts (1 and 2) exhibited a MIC of 1.17 mg/mL and 0.83 mg/mL. Lastly, against S. aureus, hexane extracts (1 and 2) suppressed the growth with a MIC of 0.77 mg/mL and 0.25 mg/mL, respectively, while both methanolic extracts (1 and 2) demonstrated a MIC of 3.33 mg/mL. These findings showcase the promising antibacterial activity of Dolabella auricularia egg string extracts and highlight their potential for further investigation and development in the pharmaceutical field.

Biodiversitas 23: 6049-6055. Marine organisms have become essential candidates for discovering novel compounds that can be medically and commercially important. They are believed to yield novel compounds with unique chemical structures and significant biological activities since they managed to survive a milieu of pathogenic microorganisms and essential predators. The quest against fungal infections has been challenging due to acquired resistance to commercially available drugs hence, novel sources to treat infectious diseases caused by fungi have been investigated. Sea cucumbers have been recognized in Asian countries as a rich food source. Apart from that, they have also been studied for their medicinal properties. This study aimed to evaluate the antifungal activity of the selected sea cucumber species found in Brgy. Sugod, Tukuran, Zamboanga del Sur, Mindanao, Philippines using the modified SPOTi assay. Methanol: ethyl acetate crude extracts of Holothuria scabra, Stichopus sp., and Holothuria atra were tested for their antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger and Candida tropicalis. A 96-well plate assay was used, and the growth of fungi was assessed visually for up to 72hrs. The concentration resulting in ‘no fungal growth’ was observed and taken as the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) value. The average MIC was calculated. Results showed that sea cucumber crude extracts have MIC values of 0.0333-0.1 mg/mL. Tukey’s posthoc test confirmed that the antifungal activity of the sea cucumber extracts was comparable to the positive control Fluconazole (p>0.05). The present study revealed a potentially effective natural antifungal agent from sea cucumbers.
