Antimicrobial activity of crude extracts and fractions of Vernonia polyanthes Less (assa-peixe) flowers

Abstract: Antimicrobial activity of crude extracts and fractions of Vernonia polyanthes Less (assa-peixe) flowers. Vernonia polyanthes, known as "assa-peixe", is a plant native to Brazil, and the decoction or infusion of its flowers, roots and leaves are used in folk medicine, being considered sources of diuretic, balsamic, anti-rheumatic substances, and are used in cases of bronchitis and persistent cough. The aim of the study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the extract/fractions obtained by methanol mace… Show more

“…This study involved an evaluation of the in vitro antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa, E. coli, and S. aureus, but only the last species exhibited inhibition to the concentration used (30 mg mL −1 ). There is no consensus on the acceptable level of inhibition for natural products when compared to antibiotic standards since the material is a mixture of compounds and not a single compound in isolation (Almeida et al, 2014;Waltrich et al, 2015).…”

“…The antimicrobial assay for ciprofloxacin samples was carried out using the agar well-diffusion assay as described by Waltrich et al, 22 against Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853), and Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) while agar dilution method as described by Okore 23 was used to test for the antibacterial potency of the metronidazole samples against Peptostrepocuccus spp and Lactobacillus spp.…”

“…The antibiotic used in this study was carried out as [12]. Hence, the antibacterial potential of the fractions can be assume as good, indeed, although the zone diameters obtained are much lower than results of antibiotics.…”
