Antimicrobial Activity and Cytotoxic Effect on Gingival Cells of Silver Nanoparticles Obtained by Biosynthesis

Abstract: The emergence and development of biofilm is steadily increasing and its currently used prevention and control schemes are free of unwanted effects. Silver nanoparticles obtained through biosynthesis represent an area of interest in the biofilm approach. In the present study, silver nanoparticles were obtained by using the aqueous extract of rosemary leaves which were subsequently tested for antimicrobial activity and for the influence regarding viability of healthy gingival cells. Experiments have shown a sign… Show more

“…To study cell viability, the colorimetric microculture tetrazolium assay (MTT) was used, as described by Andor et al ( 23 ) and Isaia et al ( 24 ). Cells were cultured in 96-well plates using a number of 1×10 4 cells/well.…”

“…Similarly, risk factors such as lifestyle (nutrition, smoking, alcohol consumption), long-term use of contraceptives, exposure to environmental toxicants were described in the tumorigenesis related to human papilloma virus infection ( 35 , 36 ). A novel identified risk factor for colorectal cancer is microbial dysbiosis (biofilms) in gut microbiome ( 37 ), biofilms being also responsible for most types of infections (~65% nosocomial infections and ~80% of all microbial infections) ( 38 ). Furthermore, environmental toxicants such as heavy metals, including cadmium, play an asserted role in the pathogenesis of the disease, according to recent studies ( 14 , 39 ).…”

“…The reagents used in the present study were of analytical grade, acquired from Sigma Aldrich, Germany and utilized as received without any other supplementary purification. Green silver nanoparticles were obtained as previously described by Andor et al [8]. Briefly, to an aqueous rosemary leaves extract (RAE) -recognized both as a reducing and stabilizing agent -was added an aqueous solution of AgNO 3 (1 mM) and the reaction mixture was inserted in an orbital shaker (away from light, for two days, 250 rpm, at room temperature), then purified and utilized in the in vitro experiments.…”
