“…It should be noted that the ESR is not induced by indoleamine hallucinogens (Yim et al, 1979). In fact, LSD and 5-MeO-DMT actually block the ESR induced by mescaline, DOM, and DOI (Chen and Bohner, 1960; Borsey et al, 1964; Darmani et al, 1990b). Based on the finding that the DOI-induced ESR is also inhibited by the 5-HT 1A/1B agonist RU 24969 but not by the 5-HT 1A agonist 8-OH-DPAT (Darmani et al, 1990b), it appears that blockade of the ESR by the indoleamine hallucinogens involves interactions between 5-HT 2A and 5-HT 1B receptors.…”

“…It was observed, however, that mescaline inhibited the isolation-induced attack behavior of mice (3 18). It produced a scratching response in mice, which was antagonized by tetrahydroberberine (3 19), various tranquilizers, serotonin, d-amphetamine, etc., but not by barbiturates, meprobamate, azacyclonol, and mephenesin (320)(321)(322). Mescaline, given by intracerebral injection, produced aggressive tendencies and paroxysms of ear scratching in mice by doses that were ineffective by other routes (323).…”
