Antigenotoxic effects of a polyherbal drug septilin against the genotoxicity of cyclophosphamide in mice

Abstract: HighlightsAntigenotoxic effect of septilin against cyclophosphamide (CP) an anticancer drug was evaluated in Swiss albino mice.In vivo micronucleus (MN) assays and sperm shape abnormality assay were used as test parameters.Pretreatment with septilin significantly decreased the clastogenic damage induced by CP.Protective effect of septilin may be due to the synergistic effects of individual plants/their constituents.

“…The micronuclei (MN) assay is a minimally invasive method as an evidence of chromosomal damage (Arul et al, 2017). It is used to detect the genotoxic effects of environmental mutagens (Shruthi and Vijayalaxmi, 2016). The incidence of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes (MnPCEs), caused appearance of some changes in polymorphism band patterns, and induced different histopathological lesions in the livers, kidneys, and testis (Khalil et al, 2008).…”

“…The P/N ratio in normal condition is found to be 1 and suppression in its value suggests the cytotoxic effect of the compound [ 16 , 17 ]. The reduction in the total sperm count and increase in sperm shape abnormalities is reported to indicate defective spermatogenesis and structural damage to spermatozoa, respectively, and both are indicative of the nuclear abnormalities the germinal cell has undergone [ 5 , 18 ]. The diminished sperm motility has been linked to the ability of the compound to affect the viability of the sperm cells [ 19 ].…”

“…It is well known that the antioxidant enzymes present in plants are responsible for their antigenotoxic activity. A majority of the phytochemicals with antioxidant activity also show anti-mutagenic and anti-genotoxic potential [51, 52, 53]. Therefore, the investigation on the antioxidant properties of ZFE was of prime importance.…”
