Abstract: Neospora caninum is a protozoan which can cause abortions in caprines. However, information regarding the humoral immune response and the occurrence of reproductive disorders is scarce. This is the first study in which the kinetics of antibodies is studied in pregnant goats naturally infected by N. caninum, as well as their respective conceptuses. The subclasses of IgG (IgG1 and IgG2) were also evaluated in pregnant goats. Reproductive problems related to neosporosis (abortion and stillbirth) occurred in 15.38… Show more

“…As in the present study only females of breeding age (≥18 months) were assessed, a higher occurrence of vertical transmission can be inferred but not proven. In goats, the congenital infection perhaps is one of the main routes of N. caninum transmission (MESQUITA et al, 2013). Figliuolo et al (2004), in the state of São Paulo; Soares et al (2009), in Mossoró, RN;Salaberry et al (2010), in Uberlândia, MG; Romanelli et al (2007), in Guarapuava, PR and Moraes et al (2011), in Maranhão, also did not identify contact with dogs as a risk factor for infection by N. caninum.…”

“…Infection was confirmed by detection of anti-N. caninum IgG antibodies in the kids'sera before colostrum ingestion using an indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT), and detection of N. caninum DNA in the dams'placentas by PCR, according to the methodologies used by Mesquita et al (2013).…”

“…There are also reports of abortion in goats naturally infected by N. caninum in the United States (Barr et al 1992, Costa Rica (Dubey et al 1996), Italy (Eleni et al 2004), Spain (Moreno et al 2012) and Argentina (Unzaga et al 2014). In Brazil, N. caninum congenital infection in goats and sheep has been described in the South, Southeast and Midwest regions, with no descriptions in the other regions of the country (Corbellini et al 2001, Pinto et al 2012, Varaschin et al 2012, Mesquita et al 2013). …”
