Antibiotic resistance and detection of the sul2 gene in urinary isolates of Escherichia coli in patients from Brazil

Abstract: Introduction: The present study aimed to assess the antibiotic resistance profiles and detect the presence of the sul2 gene in sulfamethoxazole-susceptible and resistant isolates of Escherichia coli obtained from outpatients and inpatients with urinary tract infections. Methodology: The resistance profiles of 739 strains were assessed and the presence of the sul2 gene in 100 isolates was tested. Results: The antibiotics with the highest resistance rates were ampicillin (57.4%) and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole… Show more

“…In Southern Brazil we have little recent data concerning the antimicrobial resistance of ExPEC. We had higher resistance profiles in ExPEC compared to commensal isolates, particularly with respect to resistance to fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin) and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (both at approximately 1/3 of strains being resistant) compared to other studies [24] (Figure 1). Among the ExPEC strains we tested, 28% were resistant to three or more antimicrobials.…”

“…Antimicrobials that are widely prescribed for treatment of UTI episodes include beta-lactams, trimethoprimsulfamethoxazole, quinolones, fluoroquinolones and aminoglycosides [24]. In Southern Brazil we have little recent data concerning the antimicrobial resistance of ExPEC.…”

“…These above mentioned findings were consistent with the findings in our study. Teichmann et al (2014) indicated that sul2 gene was highly prevalent in TMP-STX resistant UPEC isolates up to 67% in their study. In this study, sul2 genes were present in 68% of TMP-STX resistant isolates showing that sul2 genes was more prevalent than two other sul genes.…”

“…Adicionalmente, houve resistência frequente em gram-negativos para cefalosporinas de primeira geração. Esta situação está de acordo com a utilização ampla dessas medicações nos últimos anos para tratamento de ITU em gestantes e não-gestantes, acarretando aumento na resistência bacteriana [21][22][23][24][25] . Todos outros antibióticos mostraram ótimo padrão de suscetibilidade.…”
