Corals are facing a range of threats, including rises in sea surface temperature and ocean acidification. Some now argue that keeping corals ex situ (in aquaria), may be not only important but necessary to prevent local extinction, for example in the Florida Reef Tract. Such collections or are already becoming common place, especially in the Caribbean, and may act as an ark, preserving and growing rare or endangered species in years to come. However, corals housed in aquaria face their own unique set of threats. For example, hobbyists (who have housed corals for decades) have noticed seasonal mortality is commonplace, incidentally following months of peak pollen production. So, could corals suffer from hay fever? If so, what does the future hold? In short, the answer to the first question is simple, and it is no, corals cannot suffer from hay fever, primarily because corals lack an adaptive immune system, which is necessary for the diagnosis of such an allergy. However, the threat from pollen could still be real. In this review, we explore how such seasonal mortality could play out. We explore increases in reactive oxygen species, the role of additional nutrients and how the microbiome of the pollen may introduce disease or cause dysbiosis in the holobiont.

In marine environments where biofouling occurs and has an impact on the maritime economy and environment, compounds that inhibit the attachment, growth and survival of microorganisms in a biofilm complex as well as settlement of larvae are considered potential antifouling compounds. In this study, the extracellular metabolites from two surface- associated bacteria isolated from soft coral and macroalga were evaluated for antibiofilm and antisettlement activity. The bacteria were identified using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and the culture supernatant extract of each strain was evaluated for antibiofilm activity. The compounds present in the extracts were analysed using GC-MS. The two bacterial strains were identified as Bacillus licheniformis MBR1 and Vibrio alginolyticus MBR4 for the isolates from soft coral and macroalgae, respectively. The extracts inhibited the growth of biofilm-forming bacteria, biofilm formation and barnacle larval settlement. The GC-MS analysis of the extract detected the presence of compounds such as tetrapentacontane, octadecanoic acid, 2,3-dihydroxypropyl ester, hexadecanoic acid, 2-hydroxy1-(hydroxymethyl) ethyl ester and 17-pentatriacontene. The results of the study show that extracellular metabolites of the bacteria associated with marine organisms could be used as natural antifouling compounds to control biofouling.

Mosquito-borne diseases caused by infected mosquitoes like dengue fever, Zika fever, Chikungunya and malaria are spread to humans through biting causing disease epidemics all over the world. This indicates the necessity for new mosquito-borne disease control strategies in Saudi Arabia and internationally. This study evaluated the potential of local bacteria isolated from the soil of the Rahat region of Makkah, Saudi Arabia for the biocontrol of Aedes aegypti larvae, a major agent for the transmission of dengue fever. Soil samples were collected from the Rahat region, Makkah for the isolation of bacteria. The bacteria were evaluated for larvicidal activity against the larvae of A. aegypti. The bacteria that show toxicity to the larvae were identified using morphological and molecular characteristics. Four different strains of the bacteria with a toxicity towards A. aegypti larvae were isolated and identified. Two of the isolates (Brevibacillus centrosporus N8 and Cytobacillus species N7) caused 100% mortality in 24 h while the other two isolates (Escherichia coli N3 and Escherichia coli N4) caused at least 70% mortality. The findings of this study revealed the larvicidal activity of soil bacteria from the Rahat region, Makkah and could be a potential candidate for the biocontrol of mosquito vectors.
