Antibacterial PVA membranes containing TiO2/N‐halamine nanoparticles

Abstract: Inorganic-organic composites have received considerable attention due to their combined properties. In this study, a N-halamine precursor poly[5,5-dimethyl-3-(3′triethoxysilylpropyl)-hydantoin] (PSPH) was synthesized and used for the production of inorganic-organic hybrid particles after reacting with nano-TiO 2 by a sol-gel process. The hybrid particles were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, and TGA-DTG. After chlorinated in the dilute sodium hypochlorite solution, antibacterial Cl-PSPH-TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPS) c… Show more

“…In DTG pattern of S 80 P 20 F 0 , there is a band between 400 °C and 500 °C after the main weight loss stage. As discussed in former studies, this band is ascribed to the carbonation of polyene residues [ 44 ]. More importantly, the sharp peak indicating the main weight loss in DTG curve shifts from 311 °C (S 100 P 0 F 0 ) to 315 °C (S 80 P 20 F 0 ), implying that PVA with higher crystallinity than starch improving the thermal stability of composite.…”

“…Additionally, S. aureus was entirely eliminated within 5 min. Moreover, when the chlorination time is extended to 6 h, the PP/M-2N/2%-Cl films acquired antibacterial activity of 99.9% against E. coli within merely 1 min, manifesting superior antibacterial performance. , …”

“…To avoid this potential threat, antibacterial agents are often added to prepare antibacterial air filtration materials. Inorganic compounds such as silver (Ag), [37][38][39] copper (Cu), 40,41 titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ), [42][43][44] and some natural plant extracts (e.g., melaleuca alternifolia extract, 45 bitter ginseng extract, 46 eucalyptus leaf extract, 47 mung bean protein, 48 etc.) have been applied in the production of antimicrobial materials.…”
