Antibacterial and wound healing activities of melastoma malabathricum linn.

Abstract: Melastoma malabathricum Linn. (Melastomataceae), locally known as senduduk putih, is a wellknown plant in Malaysian traditional medicine. On the basis of its traditional use and literature reference, this plant was selected for evaluation of its wound healing and antibacterial activities. Methanol extract of M. malabathricum was examined for its wound healing activity in the form of an ointment in two types of wound model in rats: (i) the excision wound model and (ii) the incision wound model. The methanol ext… Show more

“…Leaves of M. malabathricum were collected from mature plants growing freely at the periphery of a farm area on the UPM campus. Leaves were utilized in the present study following their wide use in numerous pharmacological studies on the species [ 6 , 7 , 8 ]. Harvested leaf samples were cleaned and washed using tap water and subsequently rinsed with distilled water.…”

“…Scientifically, M. malabathricum was prepared as extracts using different types of solvents and tested in various in vitro and in vivo studies to demonstrate its remarkable pharmacological potentials. The plant extracts, regardless of parts of the plant, were found to exhibit anti-inflammatory [1], antimicrobial [3], antioxidant [4], wound healing [5], antiulcer [6], anti-hyperlipidemic [7,8], and anti-diabetic [7][8][9] activities. However, most studies were focused on the biological activities of crude extract and limited information on the key phytochemical(s) contributing to the reported properties.…”
