Antibacterial and cytotoxic activities of cyclohexane, dichloromethane, methanol, and aqueous extracts of Cantharellus cibarius were tested. Broth microdilution assay was performed against 10 bacterial strains (Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, Micrococcus luteus, Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus feacalis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella abony), with emphasis on Helicobacter pylori. Methanol extract was the most active against H. pylori strains with minimal inhibitory concentration values between 4 and 32 μg/mL. All extracts were active against antibiotic resistant H. pylori. Methanol and aqueous extracts had no cytotoxicity against tested cell lines, whereas cyclohexane and dichloromethane extracts were active against HeLa and N87 cells, but also against healthy MRC-5 cells (IC 39.26 ± 1.24-134.79 ± 0.01 μg/mL). The tested aqueous extracts have shown 68% of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory activity in doses of 1.25 mg/mL. Chemical analysis has shown the presence of linoleic, cis-vaccenic, and oleic acids, sterols, β-glucans, and polyphenolic compounds.

Antiviral properties of methanol and aqueous extracts from Morchella conica and Fomes fomentarius were assessed by colorimetric XTT test against human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV). HEp-2 cell line was used for the cytotoxic and antiviral effects of the extracts. Non-cytotoxic concentrations of methanol and aqueous extracts of M. conica were tested in 50000 to 195 µg/mL. In contrast, the cytotoxic F. fomentarius methanol and aqueous extracts and Ribavirin were tested at concentrations from 3347-13.1 μg/mL, 4906.5-19.2 μg/mL and 86.60-0.30 μg/mL, respectively. The results showed that aqueous extract of F. fomentarius had strong anti-HRSV activity (EC 50 = 358.7 μg/mL, SI = 27.4) which could be compared with ribavirin (EC 50 = 15.6 μg/mL, SI = 11.1) used as a positive control against HRSV, while other extracts (M. conica methanol extract EC 50 = 28055 μg/mL, SI = >1.8; F. fomentarius methanol extract EC 50 = 3000 μg/mL, SI = 2.2) were found to have weak antiviral activity. As a result, it can be said that aqueous extract of F. fomentarius is worthy of further study as an alternative drugs in order to develop anti RSV.

In this study, 18 mushrooms were collected from Gandhi Krishi Vigyana Kendra (GKVK) campus, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore (India) and identified by Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region using National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) data base and screened for antibacterial property against two skin infection causing bacteria viz.,Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus in dogs. Eleven mushrooms extract inhibited both the bacteria showing their antimicrobials as broad spectrum while inhibiting gram positive as well as gram negative bacteria. The highest zone of inhibition was recorded from the extract of Lyophyllum sp. The extract of two mushrooms viz., Phlebopus portentosus and Termitomyces sp. inhibited only P. aeruginosa, a gram negative bacterium and the extract of three mushrooms viz., Agaricus sp, Coprinellus disseminates and Agaricus blazei inhibited only S. aureus, a gram positive bacterium, suggesting spectral specificity of their antimicrobial compounds. However, the extracts of two mushrooms viz.,Macrocybe gigantea and Schizophyllum commune did not show inhibition of any of the pathogens. Hence, this study suggests that the occurrence of potential pharmaceuticals in mushrooms can be exploited for control of multidrug resistant bacteria.
