Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Effects of Boron on Different Bacteria

Abstract: Boron (B) compounds are used in many fields ranging from medicine to industry. In this study, boric acid (BA) and disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (DOT) were evaluated for their antibacterial effects and antibiofilm capacities on selected strains of clinical and type cultures that are of veterinary concern (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Aeromonas hydrophila ATCC 19570, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Brucella melitensis Rev1 and field isolates of Vibrio anguillarum, Aeromonas hydrophila, Yersinia rucker… Show more

“…Boron (B) is an essential plant micronutrient, but excessive B is toxic to both of plants (Aitken & McCallum, ) and of bacteria (Mansour, Bradford, & Venkatesan, ; Sayin, Ucan, & Sakmanoglu, ). A significant decrease in microbial diversity and richness is observed in the rhizospheric soil with high B content (Nelson & Mele, ).…”

“…It is necessary for human and animal cell functions, as it binds to cis-hydroxyl groups on cell membranes (20,21). Boron has increasingly been studied in new areas of research (7,8,22). Based on their principal mechanism of action, one of two groups of vaccine adjuvants is called "immune potentiators" (23).…”

“…Such assessments could be strengthened by measuring additional cytokines. BA in the Kangal cell cultures may predominantly drive proliferation of B lymphocytes, since IL-4 is also referred to as B cell growth factor (BCGF) (7). More comprehensive measurements of additional cytokines over a time course should be undertaken in the future.…”

“…Sayın ve ark. (2016) [29], borik asit molekülünün çeşitli bakterilerde biyofilm üzerine etkisini değerlendirdikleri çalışmalarında sadece P. aeruginosa ATCC 27853 suşunda biyofilm oluşumu üzerine etkili olmadığını tespit etmesine rağmen bu çalışmada biyofilm oluşumunu 2-NFBA %36, 4-BFBA %39, 4-KFBA %42, 4-FLFBA %30, 4-FFBA %35 ve 4-MFBA %36 oranında azalttığı tespit edilmiştir (Şekil3).…”
