Does organic management of agroecosystems contribute to the maintenance of the richness of ants? This study assessed the richness of ant species in organically farmed crop agroecosystems of different ages located in the southern state of Paraná, Brazil. During the sampling, the pitfalls that were active during May/August 2009 and from October 2009 to February 2010 were used. A total of 11,874 ants belonging to five subfamilies was sampled, comprising 18 genera and 48 species. The subfamily Myrmicinae (S = 27) had the highest richness, followed by the genera Pheidole (S = 10), Solenopsis (S = 7), Formicinae (S = 3), Camponotus (S = 5), and Brachymyrmex (S = 5). The average difference between the observed richness (Sobs) and the estimated richness (Chao2) was 10.9%. Ant assemblages belonging to agroecosystems under organic management for long times presented the greatest richness, indicating that this system contributes to the maintenance of ant diversity. Este trabalho avaliou a riqueza de formigas presentes em lavouras inseridas em agroecossistemas de manejo orgânico, com tempos de integralização diferentes, localizados no sul do Estado do Paraná, Brasil. Na amostragem, foram utilizadas pitfalls que permaneceram ativas nos períodos de maio a agosto de 2009 e outubro de 2009 a fevereiro de 2010. Foram amostradas 11.874 formigas pertencentes a cinco subfamílias, 18 gêneros e 48 espécies. Destacou-se em riqueza a subfamília Myrmicinae (S = 27) e os gêneros Pheidole (S = 10) e Solenopsis (S = 7). Também Formicinae (S = 3) e os gêneros Camponotus (S = 5) e Brachymyrmex (S = 5). A diferença média entre a riqueza observada (Sobs) e a estimada (Chao 2) foi de 10,9%. Assembleias pertencentes aos agroecossistemas com maior tempo de manejo orgânico foram as mais ricas, indicando que este sistema contribui para a manutenção da diversidade de formigas. The conversion of natural environments into agricultural areas has led to habitat fragmentation and caused impacts on biological communities. This study evaluated the richness and abundance of ant assemblages from different environments within a small rural property. The study was conducted in December 2015 in the Palma Sola municipality, extreme western region of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The sampled environments included a permanent preservation area, a forest fragment, a corn crop, a tobacco crop and a pine reforestation. Pitfall traps and manual collections were used. The observed richness totaled 69 species. Only two species, Camponotus rufipes and Pheidole lignicola, occurred in the five environments sampled. Overall, 65.3% of the variation in ants' occurrence, according to the sampled environments, was explained by the principal component analysis (PCA) components. This study presents new results on the ant diversity from rural areas, and may provide potential subsidies for management and conservation plans.Keywords: agro ecosystems; agrochemicals; ant fauna; conservation; richness. RESUMOA transformação de ambientes naturais em áreas agrícolas vem provocando a fragmentação ambiental e gerando impactos sobre as comunidades de organismos. Este estudo avaliou a riqueza e a abundância das assembleias de formigas de ambientes que compõem uma propriedade rural. O estudo foi conduzido no município de Palma Sola, extremo oeste catarinense, no mês de dezembro de 2015. Os ambientes avaliados foram uma área de preservação permanente, um fragmento florestal, uma lavoura de milho, uma lavoura de tabaco e um reflorestamento de pinus. Foram utilizadas armadilhas de queda e coleta manual. A riqueza amostrada foi de 69 espécies. Apenas duas espécies, Camponotus rufipes e Pheidole lignicola, ocorreram nos cinco ambientes amostrados. Ao todo, 65,3% da variação das ocorrências de formigas segundo os ambientes amostrados foi explicada pelos componentes da análise de componentes principais (ACP). Este estudo apresenta indicativos da diversidade presente em ambientes rurais e pode representar subsídios para planos de manejo e conservação.

Ants are sensitive to habitat change and may be affected by disturbances, such as alien plant invasion. Alien plant invasion is associated with negative effects on the functioning of ecosystems and may have adverse impacts on biodiversity. The aim of this study was to determine the diversity of ground‐dwelling ants in Tanglewood and Giba Gorge Reserves in KwaZulu‐Natal Province, South Africa. Ants were sampled in the wet and dry seasons. Pitfall trap sampling was carried out in an intact grassland, forest and a disturbed grassland. We collected 360 samples resulting in a total of 2,577 occurrences comprising of 54 species. We found that diversity of ants in the two sites was influenced by vegetation type. The intact grassland in the two reserves had greater diversity (40 ± 4.45) of ants compared with forest (22 ± 4.86) and disturbed grassland (27 ± 1.15); however, the disturbed grassland supported higher ant occurrences (50.03 ± 31.6). Opportunists represented the most diverse functional group with 17 species followed by specialist predators with 13 species and generalised Myrmicinae with 10 species. These results suggest that grassland disturbance by alien plant invasion provides suitable environmental conditions that may increase ant occurrences but decrease ant diversity.
