“…35 Since some of the patients had presented with annular skin lesions, there might be a possibility of development of annular erythema associated with Sjö gren syndrome; however, this rare entity has mostly been reported for Asian patients. 45,46 Histological evaluation of skin lesions is necessary to confirm the diagnosis of LET, and, therefore, it represents one of the major criteria of this disease (Table 3). In contrast to SCLE and DLE, 30,32,33,47 follicular hyperkeratosis, epidermal atrophy, vacuolar degeneration, and thickening of the basement membrane zone usually are not found.…”

“…Later, annular erythema resembling the subacute lesion was frequently observed in Asian patients with SS, and anti-SS-A (Ro) antibodies have been detected in 50% to 60% of serum samples from these patients, the percentage of which is similar to that in subacute cutaneous LE. [9][10][11][33][34][35] There has been a close linkage between annular ery- thema and anti-SS-A (Ro) antibodies, but we did not find any association of annular lesions with JS-1 antibody production ( Figure 3). Therefore, we speculated that a diseasespecific expression of ␣-fodrin could be observed at the eccrine sweat duct and may play a crucial role during the development of SS-relevant skin lesions because it has been reported 13 that 120-kd ␣-fodrin is intensely expressed on the epithelial duct of inflamed salivary glands.…”

“…7 Provost et al 8 described 10 patients with SS and LE who were positive for anti-SS-A (Ro) and pointed out a close clinical and pathological relationship. In addition, several authors [9][10][11] reported that annular erythema develops in Asian patients with SS and LE, but attempts to identify autoantibodies specific for this skin lesion have been unsuccessful. 12 There is clearly a need for a new laboratory test to discriminate SS from LE.…”

“…This type of erythema predominantly occurs in Asian people with positive anti-SS-A and/or -SS-B antibodies [1][2][3][4][5]. In contrast, Occidental people with positive anti-SS-A antibody develop SOLE as is reported in the previous literature [6][7][8], However, little is known about the patho physiological mechanisms underlying these cutaneous manifestations.…”

“…It has been reported in the recent literature that patients with Sjögren syndrome (SjS) frequently develop annular erythematous lesions, which is clearly distinct from sub acute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE) on the basis of clinical, histopathological and immunological analysis [1][2][3][4][5]. Most of the cases have been reported from the Asian area, especially from Japan.…”
