Animal genetic resources in Brazil: result of five centuries of natural selection

Abstract: Brazil has various species of domestic animals, which developed from breeds brought by the Portuguese settlers soon after their discovery. For five centuries, these breeds have been subjected to natural selection in specific environments. Today, they present characteristics adapted to the specific Brazilian environmental conditions. These breeds developed in Brazil are known as "Crioulo," "local," or naturalized. From the beginning of the 20th century, some exotic breeds, selected in temperate regions, have be… Show more

“…During five centuries the European cattle underwent natural selection in those specific environments originating four new bovine breeds showing unique adaptive traits for different backgrounds. Curraleiro Pé-duro was the first bovine breed arisen in Brazil, since it was based where the settles introduced the breeding (Mariante & Egito 2002, Serrano et al 2005, McManus et al 2011. During the last century, exotic breeds were introduced in Brazil aiming the increase of the commercial production.…”

“…Since they were introduced in Brazil, these horses have been selected for this kind of work over many generations and have developed in localized characteristic genetic groups, also referred to as naturalized Brazilian breeds by Mariante and Egito, (2002). In 1993, was set up a national program for conservation of genetic resources involving various animals of different genetic groups, including breeds of the horses Lavradeiro in the State of Roraima, Pantaneiro in Mato Grosso do Sul, Campeiro in Santa Catarina and Marajoara on the island of Marajó, Pará.…”
