Anatomy of the Cladodes and Ecological Adaptation in Opuntia (Cactaceae) From the Province of Buenos Aires (Argentina)

Abstract: In this paper we examine the cladodes anatomy of Opuntia arechavaletae, O. aurantiaca, O. bonaerensis, O. elata, O. ficus-indica, O. megapotamica, O. penicilligera, O. sulphurea var. pampeana, and O. ventanensis that grows in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The aim of this study was to establish diagnostic features in order to deepen knowledge of ability of adaptation to the environmental. “…La presencia de cutícula delgada se corresponde a hojas típicamente higromórficas o mesomórficas (Roth, 1984). Estas características ya fueron descritas para varias especies que crecen en ambientes con elevada humedad ambiente como ser la selva misionera (Arambarri et al, 2008).…”

Entre las eudicotiledóneas se observó predominancia de mesofilo homogéneo y dorsiventral.…”

“…Calcium oxalates can affect digestion and harm the mouthparts of insects [24] [34] [35]. Opuntia cultivars have different sizes of cuticle and epidermis [36] [37] that could also be a barrier to Dactylopius spp [8] [12] [38]. From the above pieces of evidence, it can be the hypothesis that calcium oxalate and other cladode features may have a role in D. coccus resistance of O. ficus-indica cultivars.…”
