“…For the ingroup of Spirobolida, after egg-laying, the eggs can be covered by faecal material and is therefore camouflaged as frass [64]. Defecation is also a limitation in euarthropodans as it can lead to water loss; yet, in millipedes, adaptations to the hindgut and malpighian tubes help in the reabsorption of water before the full expulsion of frass [65]. Other euarthropodans are seemingly showing "frass-keeping"; in lepidopteran, larvae in times of reduced water availability will substantially reabsorb water from faeces (i.e., rectal complex) [66].…”

“…Each double segment has two pairs of legs and two pairs of spiracles, which open into atria and numerous tracheae tubes penetrating organs or ending in the hemolymph. In the desert millipede Orthoporus (Diplopoda) spiracles do not contain valves but are occluded by a combination of overlapping body segments and coxae compression (736). Hemocyanin in Diplopoda, for example, Spirostreptus , is a high‐affinity protein with low cooperativity, reflecting their subterrestrial hypoxic habitat ((397), (398)) (Fig.…”
