Anatomic description of the anterolateral ligament of the knee

Abstract: Analysis of the current scientific literature related to the anterolateral ligament and layer-by-layer dissection of the lateral region of 14 cadaveric knees has led to the conclusion that the anterolateral ligament is a thickening of the knee joint capsule located in the third layer of the lateral region of the knee (according to Seebacher) which is not always clearly morphologically differentiated from the remainder of the joint capsule. The anterolateral ligament is unequivocally a part of the joint capsule… Show more

“…Existe controversia en cuanto al origen extraarticular o intraarticular del mismo (8,9) . Algunos reportan que la cápsula puede incorporar un número de fibras profundas del LAL (8,10,39) , mientras que otros defienden el origen extracapsular del mismo (9,10,12,22) . La localización de la inserción femoral es la que más discusión provoca.…”

“…The ALL seems to have a certain variability that occurs in at 33-97% of the human population. 1,4,15,16 Whether the ALL is absent from a specimen or has simply been obliterated or overlooked can be due to the multiple dissection techniques. 17 The impact of an ALL absence, even if only unilateral, needs to be investigated in clinical and imaging studies to finally clarify its importance.…”

“…10,19 The width seems to be less than 10 mm. 1,16,22,23 The thickness also presents great variability -from 0.87 mm to 2-3 mm. 15,23 This variability depends on the dissection technique.…”

“…Despite the understanding of the anterolateral structures as a restraint, recent publications of a newly discovered "anterior longitudinal ligament" has engaged the research community in a re-examination of the anatomical, histological, and biomechanical components of the anterolateral capsule [59,60]. Recent anatomic study has reported the dissections of 24 different animal species in which a double lateral collateral ligament (LCL) was observed in three types of primates, but no discrete ALL was ever discovered.…”
