Anatomic and functional evaluation of the lymphatics and lymph nodes in diagnosis of lymphatic circulation disorders with contrast magnetic resonance lymphangiography

Abstract: Contrast MR lymphangiography with gadobenate dimeglumine is capable of visualizing the precise anatomy of lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes in lymphedematous limbs. It also provides information concerning the functional status of lymph flow transport in the lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes of these limbs.

“…Enhancement of lymphatic vessels is optimal near the contrast media site. On the other hand, visualization of larger lymphatic vessels may be suboptimal, and venous enhancement which is frequently observed may be confusing (15,16).…”

“…It is safe, convenient and highly reproducible, but the disadvantage is low image resolution (Borgstein et al, 1998;Wood and Angermeier, 2010). Direct angiography of lymphatic vessels can lead to fatal complications and is difficult to operate (Liu et al, 2009). The experimental method applied in the present study is simple to operate, safe, reliable, and produces good contrast of penile lymphatic vessels (Einarsdottir et al, 2004).…”

“…Radionuclide lymphatic imaging has the disadvantage of low image resolution (Borgstein et al, 1998). Direct lymphangiography can lead to fatal complications and is difficult to operate, therefore, it is now no longer applied routinely (Liu et al, 2009).…”
