Analytical approximations of K-corrections in optical and near-infrared bands

Abstract: To compare photometric properties of galaxies at different redshifts, the fluxes need to be corrected for the changes of effective rest-frame wavelengths of filter bandpasses, called K-corrections. Usual approaches to compute them are based on the template fitting of observed spectral energy distributions (SED) and, thus, require multicolour photometry. Here, we demonstrate that, in cases of widely used optical and near-infrared (NIR) filters, K-corrections can be precisely approximated as two-dimensional low-… Show more

“…We also apply k-correction for the UV photometry using publicly available k-correction tool (Chilingarian, Melchior, & Zolotukhin 2010;. We use FUV−NUV and NUV−r colours to predict k-correction of individual galaxies at FUV and NUV, respectively.…”

“…The second step is the correction for redshift. This is done using analytic approximations for the k-correction provided by Chilingarian et al (2010), which are functions of colours (corrected for extinction) and redshift. A meaningful application of this correction is possible for almost all galaxies in this catalogue, except for the galaxies in the Fornax Cluster and the galaxies in the Local group, where the available data is insufficient.…”

“…K-corrections for each galaxy were computed using the Kcorrections calculator (Chilingarian, Melchior & Zolotukhin 2010;Chilingarian & Zolotukhin 2012). Next we assigned a B/T ratio for each galaxy from the measurements of Lackner & Gunn (2012).…”
