Analysis of Uranium Mobility and Concentration Process in Objects of Environment and Patients’ Kidney Stones in Kharkiv Region

Abstract: The specific activity of 235U and content of native uranium for the Kharkiv region in drinking water, soil, roots, the leaf of hydrophyte “Pistia stratiotes” and the samples of kidney stones obtained from patients with urolithiasis were measuring by using gamma activation analysis on linac accelerator of NSC KIPT. The whole sample contained alpha-emitter uranium.

“…It was documented that, the existence of uranium isotopes in groundwater is related to the hydrothermal, geochemical, and mineralogical conditions of the aquifers 35,36 . Uranium mobility to urinary stones was confirmed in the literature using a gamma spectrometer, and it might have a role in the formation of a specific type of urinary stones 37,38 . The divalent uranium compounds have the ability to deposit on the surface of hydroxyapatite crystal by ion exchange of Ca +2 ions, and it is strongly bound with two phosphate groups 38 .…”

“…Trivalent and pentavalent uranium compounds could be found soluble in water and air whereas other oxidation states exist in solid states such as soil and rocks. The elevation of uranium concentration in drinking water and groundwater may cause uranium accumulation in the kidney and consequently in urinary stones, which could have a harmful renal effect and produce chemical changes in renal tubules 37,39,40 …”

“…As a rule, environmental factors are dierent in each biogeocenosis and therefore they are able to greatly enhance or weaken the biological eect of radiation factors. Even low levels of radiation (α, β and γ-emitters), which are classied as low doses, can accumulate in environmental objects (soil, water, plants) [1][2][3] and subsequently have a negative impact on the human body. Therefore, the problem of low doses is actual and has not been suciently studied so far.…”
