Abstract: The alteration of the delicate balance that regulates the secretion and distribution of the tear film determines the dry eye (DE) syndrome, because the tear film represents the interface between the eye and the environment. Despite having a multifactorial origin, the main risk factors for the emergence of the ocular disease are female gender and advanced age. Peer-reviewed version available at Int. J. Mol. “…Similar results were also shown by studies in Spain [35]. Nebbioso et al [36] suggested that the reason for the increase of dry eye prevalence with age is a reduction in tear volume and flow and increases in evaporation. Women suffer more from eye symptoms than men and it is associated with hormonal changes [37].…”

“…Corneal thickness, curvature, and sensitivity were altered throughout the menstrual cycle (Ghahfarokhi et al, 2015). A suggestive link between hormones and corneal structure is suggested by the presence of hormones in the human tear film (Nebbioso et al, 2017). Surprisingly, the role of sex hormones in corneal diseases has been neglected.…”

“…The pathogenic factors of dry eye syndrome are more complicated, and the environment and personal habits may cause pathological and physiological changes on the surface of the eye. 12,13 Studies have shown that all factors that damage the function of the lacrimal gland may cause changes in the composition of the tear film and cause tear film instability. 14 If the tear film is abnormal for a long time without intervention, it may be converted into inflammation.…”
