Analysis of the Embodied Energy and CO2 Emissions of Ready-Mixed Concrete: A Case Study in Cuenca, Ecuador

Abstract: Concrete is the most commonly construction material used worldwide. In contrast to other countries, Ecuador lacks studies that determine the environmental impact of the production of construction materials. This research presents a quantification of embodied energy and CO2 emissions associated with the concrete production, using as a case study a ready-mixed concrete plant in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador. The study was based on the Life Cycle Assessment methodology established by ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, and th… Show more

“…Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is the most widely used cement binder in modern concrete applications. The manufacturing of OPC clinker results in utilizing massive quantities of natural resources and energy, which has an adverse impact on the environment [17][18][19][20][21]. It is estimated that 0.83 kg of CO 2 is produced during the production of 1 kg of cement clinker, which corresponds to the cement manufacturing industry bearing responsibility for nearly 6-8% of global CO 2 emissions [17,[22][23][24].…”
