Analysis of the Effects of Failure of a Gas Pipeline Caused by a Mechanical Damage

Abstract: Natural gas continues to be one of the basic energy sources used as fuel in the power sector, in industries and in households. The potential and attractiveness of this fuel is gaining special significance in the current energy transitions from coal-based power engineering to power generation based on renewable energy sources. Natural gas is supplied to consumers mainly through a network of pipelines, which ensures a relatively high reliability of the supply. Still, failures occur due to the corrosion of pipeli… Show more

“…However, exposure can lead to pipeline failure, which is one of the biggest backlogs to the industry, and safety is given the highest priority in these critical sectors due to the high-risk exposure. The combination of design, material, and operating practices always lowers the chances of pipe failure, and natural occurrences and exposure to critical elements also contribute to pipeline system failure [2]. To eliminate such failures, pipeline structure is given the highest level of priority and maintenance to maintain continuous product flow.…”

“…In an era driven by rapid technological advancements and ever-increasing demand for energy resources, pipeline infrastructure systems play a pivotal role in facilitating the transportation of crucial commodities, such as oil and gas, by connecting producing areas to refineries, chemical plants, consumers, and other business areas [1]. While these pipeline systems form the lifeline of modern societies, they also face a myriad of challenges, ranging from natural disasters [2] and mechanical failures [3] to human-induced incidents and security threats [1,4]. To ensure the robustness and sustainability of pipeline infrastructures, a comprehensive understanding of sustainability risk has become an imperative part of pipeline operations and maintenance policies [5].…”

“…For a long time, discussions have been ongoing in the gas production community about increasing the safety of pipelines by installing protective sleeves (casings) on highpressure gas pipelines. Protective sleeves are one of the safety elements that can reduce the risk of serious damage to gas pipelines [2]. Because protective sleeves can protect gas pipelines from the heavy loads caused by vehicles and trains, they have become a subject of attention for pipeline safety authorities [3] and have found their place in international standards, e.g., [4].…”
