“…In the international literature, many studies analyzed the pattern of consumption of the elderly in different countries, such as Lührmann (2005) in Germany, Lefèbvre (2006) in Belgium, Dewhurst (2006) in Scotland, Ying and Yao (2006) in China, Della Vigna and Pollet (2007) and Banerjee (2012) in USA and Albuquerque and Lopes (2009) in Portugal. In Brazil, several recent studies investigated social and economic characteristics of the Brazilian elderly, especially Almeida and Kassouf (2004), Almeida and Freitas (2007), Zanon et al (2013), Melo et al (2014) and Almeida and Souza (2019). Among these studies, we highlight Almeida and Souza (2019), which analyzed the differences in consumption patterns between families that are headed by the elderly and those that are not using Brazilian household budget surveys for the years 1987/88, 1995/96, 2002/03 and 2008/09.…”

The authors found that elderly-headed families spent more on pharmaceuticals and health, and people aged 60–70 presented a profile of consumer behavior that was similar to nonelderly individuals.…”

“…A significant divide in consumption preferences is observed between the elderly and the young as the elder people generally spend more on medical care and health services and less on food and clothing (Sorensen, 2013; Almeida and Souza, 2019). Meanwhile, aging affects household carbon emissions indirectly via changes in income level and structure and amount of energy usage (Fan et al ., 2021).…”

“…Zhang, et al [6] concluded that older households require fewer industrial goods and more services than younger households. Furthermore, decreasing social activities make them spend less on clothing, entertainment, and transportation [1,41]. In comparison, they spend more time in their rooms, which consumes more residential energy [22].…”
