Abstract: Following a rise in population, load demand is increasing even in the remote areas and islands of Bangladesh. Being an island that is also far from the mainland of Bangladesh, St. Martin’s is in need of electricity. As it has ample renewable energy resources, a renewable energy-based microgrid system seems to be the ultimate solution, considering the ever-increasing price of diesel fuel. This study proposes a microgrid system and tests its technical and economic feasibility in that area. All possible configura… Show more

“…According to an investigation of Sinha and Chandel [48], the HOMER (Hybrid Optimization Model for Multiple Energy Resources) tool is found to be used widely by researchers. HOMER is well known for its technoeconomic modeling and has been used to evaluate energy systems in various climate regions [49]. It takes the technical and cost input of the components along with site-specific meteorological data and delivers the least NPC-optimized hybrid renewable energy system (HRES)configuration after assessing optimal and near optimal values.…”

“…To create a stable or reliable power system one has to implement hybrid energy systems where the resources are capable of complementing each another. The techno-economic benefits of hybrid off-grid systems compared to stand-alone systems are elaborated immensely in the following literature [28]- [33]. The use of biomass resource in hybrid systems has been considered a very efficient and effective way of producing cleaner energy while maintaining high system reliability.…”

“…Some of the common types of softwares used for simulation and optimization of hybrid systems are HOMER, RETScreen, SOLES, INSEL, TRANSYS, HYBRID2, IMBY, SOLSIM, CREST, RAPSYS and SAM. Out of all these, HOMER developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory is the most widely used [5][6][7][20][21][22]. So many works have been done on HRES, both off-grid [7-13, 16, 23-28] and grid connected [17,22,29].…”

“…A techno-economic feasibility study was carried out in a remote area of Bangladesh by Masrur et al, [20]. A microgrid consisting of Solar PV, Wind, DG and BATT were considered to obtain the optimal energy system.…”
