Analysis of process-induced deformation on the spring-in of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer thin laminates

Abstract: The cure process of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer laminates induces residual stress inside the parts that causes geometrical unconformities. The most important unconformity is the spring-in that means the deviation of the flange-to-flange angle from the design angle. The spring-in value depends on some process parameters, such as the lay-up sequence of the plies, as demonstrated in previous works. The aim of this work is to study the dependence of the spring-in on the deviations in the orientation of the pli… Show more

“…The sensitivity analysis presented in [32] shows the high influence of variations in fiber volume fraction on the spring-in angles. Further works investigate the effects of the local fiber orientation [33] on the spring-in effect as well as the influence of process parameter variations [34] numerically and experimentally. While most variation analyses concentrate on the spring-in effect, variations on micro and meso scale affect as well the structural performance of the part.…”

“…In the third step, FEA was used one more time to calculate the sensitivity matrix for the assembly. In this step, a point-to-point connection was used to simulate the glue, 10,21 through beam-elements, in all areas of assembly between all nodes of parts. By this fastening model, no type of contact between parts to be assembled was used.…”

“…8 Some geometrical parameters together with structural parameters influence the spring-in angle of L-shaped parts. 9,10 The research works, on variation analysis of polymer matrix composite assemblies, are very few. An experimental approach to predict and control dimension variation for composites with polymer matrix and fiber reinforcement was used in Ref.…”
