Este trabalho investigou os papéis sociais e as tarefas evolutivas desempenhados por adultos. O local escolhido para investigação foi um assentamento de famílias de baixa renda do Distrito Federal criado em 1989. Utilizou-se um questionário contendo 17 questões abertas e 15 questões fechadas, preenchido pela primeira autora durante uma visita domiciliar. Participaram 98 respondentes (73 F e 25 M), sendo 51 entre 50 e 59 anos e 47 a partir de 60 anos. Os resultados apontaram que este grupo é heterogêneo e que seus papéis sociais são influenciados pelas variáveis demográficas (idade, sexo, escolaridade, ocupação, naturalidade e estado civil) e também pelas variáveis relativas à moradia atual. Concluiu-se também que as expectativas sociais, o suporte social e a escolarização são fatores de suma importância para oferecer recursos para a otimização e compensação necessárias a um envelhecimento bem sucedido.

Every year the proportion of elderly people increases at a greater rate compared with other age groups, changing the population structure of most countries. Latin America has been internationally known for its higher percentage of young compared with elderly persons. The United Nations predicts that the proportion of elderly persons in Latin America and the Caribbean will be more similar to world figures in 2020 and even higher in 2040. The increasing elderly population in Latin America has increased the demand for advanced degree professionals with gerontology training. Nevertheless, in spite of training efforts during the last decade, the number of gerontology professionals is still insufficient. In total, the authors were able to locate only ten gerontology programs in Latin America (four in Brazil, two in Argentina, and one each in Uruguay, Peru, Cuba, and Colombia). The programs currently available in Brazil and Colombia are described in an effort to share information on the common characteristics of Master's and PhD degree programs in gerontology in Latin America. The authors concluded that, in Latin America, programs focused exclusively on gerontology are scarce.

Objective: To evaluate factors that could restrict or favour the usage between the Community Health Centers and Others Health Institutions (Social Security, Private Consult and others) by senior adults aged 60 and over living in Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Methodology: It was made from June 2003 to April 2004. The reference population was 7370 adults over 60 years old that lived under the adscription zone of 16 Community Health Centers that care of the jurisdiction number 2 in Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Our selection was 1051 people by a conglomerate sampling in two levels. We applied a survey designed by OMS/OPS 2000. We used descriptive statistics and logistic regression. Results: The probability to use the Community Health Services versus not using them increases when the senior adults do not have social securitybenefits and live alone and decrease when they have permanent salary and have basic services at home. The probability to use Others Health Institutions versus not using them decrease when senior adult does not have social security benefits, do not have nutrition risk or it is moderate, the quality of the attention is defiiient and have little or moderate family support. Conclusion: The factors that could favour the usage of the Community Centers are when the senior adults do not have social security benefits; they do not have a permanent salary; their home have basic services and live alone. However, factors when senior adults have Social Security Benefits and the quality of the attention is good could favour the use of Others Health Institutions.
