Popcorn lines with genetic resistance to foliar diseases allow the production of higher yields at lower costs. Thus, the development of resistant genotypes becomes essential, while the selection efficiency of parents and hybrids depends on the existence of genetic variability and knowledge about the genetic trait control. The objective of this study was to determine the genetic merit of the hybrid lines and genotypes, as well as the reciprocal effect; to draw conclusions on the genetic control of the traits of disease incidence and severity associated with resistance to Exserohilum turcicum, Bipolaris maydis, Puccinia polysora and of the agronomic traits grain yield and popping expansion; and to assess the effects of the trait interrelations on parent and hybrid selection. Fifty-six hybrid combinations (F1 and reciprocal crosses) were evaluated in two growing seasons. A randomized block design with four replications was used. Regardless of the growing season, the non-additive genetic component had the greatest influence on the studied traits, whereas no reciprocal effect was observed. The performance of lines L61, L70 and L76 was good in both growing seasons by increasing the level of multiple disease resistance associated with high gains in GY and PE. The hybrids L61 x L76; L61 x L77; L76 x P1 were the most promising of the tested crosses for cultivation in both seasons, targeting a decrease in the levels of several diseases and higher grain yields and popping expansion.

Resistance to multiple leaf diseases in popcorn lines with potential for baby corn production

The cultivation of special corns, such as baby corn, has had a positive influence on the economy of the country. Despite its importance, there is still a need for studies aimed at increasing production and planting areas of the crop. Phytosanitary studies are of particular interest, as the cultivation of such crops is susceptible to a series of pathogens, such as Bipolaris maydis, Exserohilum turcicum, and Puccinia polysora. The use of resistant cultivars is the most effective way to prevent the occurrence of these diseases. Thus, the present study aimed to identify popcorn lines that have the potential for baby corn production and are resistant to the main leaf diseases that affect the crop. The experiment was conducted in randomized blocks with four replications of 30 lines in each area, during two planting seasons. The area was located at the Federal Institute of Espírito Santo (IFES) Campus of Alegre, situated in Rive district, Espírito Santo State, Brazil. Using the obtained data, the area under the disease progress curve was obtained. Subsequently, analysis of the joint variance of the data was conducted, and when a significant effect was found, a grouping of means test was conducted. The Mahalanobis distance for each pair of lines was also calculated, and the genetic distance matrix was used to construct a dendrogram using the UPGMA method. Considering the averages obtained for the three diseases (Southern corn leaf blight, Northern corn leaf blight, and Southern rust), lines L61, L63, L65, L683, L684, L685, L691, L694, and L695 were identified as possible donors of resistance alleles for multiple diseases. Multivariate analysis efficiently grouped the lines L61, L63, L684, L685, and L691, which are described as most resistant in the univariate analysis.

The selection of southern rust-resistant genotypes caused by Puccinia polysora (Pucciniaceae) is considered an efficient way to control this disease, which causes high crop losses in popcorn. To help choose adequate cultivars, we examined the combining ability of lines and the agronomic performance of popcorn hybrids for rust resistance. Eight S 7 popcorn lines were used, which were crossed in a complete diallel mating scheme, resulting in 56 hybrids. The disease incidence on the whole plant (INC), severity on a leaf of the main ear (SEV), grain yield (GY), popping expansion (PE) and volume of expanded popcorn per hectare (PV) were evaluated. Analysis of variance was performed and the means were grouped by the Scott-Knott algorithm. The analysis diallel was performed by the method of Griffing, using the Diallel I method. The hybrids L76xP8, P8xL70, L77xP8, P8xP1 and L55xL76 stood out with a GY of >3000 kg.ha -1 and PE of >30 mL.g -1 . For the traits GY and VP, the nonadditive effects were predominant, and the heterosis effects high. For the trait expression of INC, SEV and PE, the additive effects were more relevant.
