An Update on Zika Virus in Asia

Abstract: Zika virus (ZIKV) was first isolated in Asia from mosquitoes from Malaysia in 1966. However, the incidence of Zika and Zika-related neurological complications in Asia is not well known. The few studies of Zika in Asia have been inconsistent in pointing to likely transmission levels, with some studies suggesting substantial transmission and others not. Interpretation of existing epidemiological and public health data from Asia is constrained by the non-specific symptomatology of Zika, the high proportion of sub… Show more

“…Although a first report on circulation of ZIKV in Bangladesh was recently published,36 there are no peer‐reviewed studies on the seroprevalence of antibodies against ZIKV in Bangladesh. Studies from surrounding areas indicate that the seroprevalence of ZIKV will not exceed 20% 11. A larger study population might thus have been required to increase the power of the study.…”

“…Recently, the association between ZIKV and GBS has also been reported in various Latin‐American countries following outbreaks of ZIKV 4, 7, 8, 9. In Asia, where ZIKV has been endemic for several decades,10, 11, 12 the occurrence of GBS and other neurological complications after ZIKV infection have thus far not been reported. The frequency of ZIKV infections in endemic areas is lower than during outbreaks, but considering the size and continuity of the exposed population, a considerable number of people in Asia are expected to be at risk to develop GBS.…”

“…An estimated 219 million new malaria cases occurred and 435,000 people died worldwide in 2017 [50]. Zika virus infected more than one million people and resulted in thousand of infants with birth defects during 2015-2016 Zika virus epidemic [30]. The 2015-2016 yellow fever outbreak in Angola and Democratic Republic of the Congo caused 7,334 suspected cases and 498 deaths [49].…”

“…The ZIKV is an arthropod-borne virus from the Flaviviridae family, which includes other well known viruses such as dengue, Japanese encephalitis and yellow fever viruses (Sam, Chan, Vythilingam, & Sulaiman, 2016). The virus was first isolated from a monkey in Uganda and the first human case reported was in 1952 when it infected a 10 year old female from Nigeria (Lim, Lim, & Yoon, 2017). Since then, there were only scattered cases reported until 2007 when an outbreak occurred on Yap Island, Federated States of Micronesia .…”
