An Update on Aptamer-Based Multiplex System Approaches for the Detection of Common Foodborne Pathogens

Abstract: Foodborne ailments constitute a public health challenge and pose an incredible economic burden in healthcare system around the globe. This dilemma has urged authorities and other entities working in field of food quality control and supply chain to play a pivotal role in ensuring food safety. Analytical strategies have been developed using numerous systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX) methods to assure food safety. High-affinity and high-sensitivity ssDNA and RNA aptamers against p… Show more

“…The short aptamer can form a stable and complex three-dimensional structure to recognize antigens of Salmonella specifically. Meanwhile, because of the aptamer's miniaturization, it can also recognize special sites which are difficult to recognize by traditional antibodies [44].…”

“…Of the non-immunoglobulin binders in combination with biosensors, aptamers and molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) are attracting the most attention to capture pathogens, including bacteria and viruses [ 198 , 199 , 200 , 201 , 202 ]. The alternative binders are relatively expensive and it can take effort and time to develop and produce sufficient amounts of the pure binder.…”

“…Despite global efforts to combat and reduce foodborne bacterial pathogens in the food chain, foodborne bacterial infections and incidence continue to grow throughout the world (Mukama et al, ). Dependence on conventional traditional detection methods for the detection of bacterial pathogens remains tedious, time‐consuming and is considered a great limitation and perhaps a sign that these methods are becoming obsolete and have approached their limits (Xiao et al, ).…”
