An Unexpected Zinc Coordination Polymer formed during the Preparation of 5-Substituted 1H-Tetrazoles from a Nitrile in Water

Abstract: The reaction of N,N-dicyanohydrazine with ZnCl2 and NaN3 in water unexpectedly affords 5-aminotetrazolato hydroxo zinc rather than a zinc complex with bis(tetrazolyl)hydrazine. An N–N bond cleavage has occurred in the Demko–Sharpless' tetrazole synthesis.

“…105 dicyanohydrazine is accompanied by cleavage of the N7N bond to give (5-aminotetrazolato)hydroxyzinc (94). 106 In the case of terephthalonitrile and 3,4-dicyanopyridine, the reaction in the presence of manganese salts is limited to azidation of only one cyano group to give complexes 95 107 and 96 98 in which the tetrazolate anion is not involved in coordination (X-ray diffraction data). A similar structure has been found for some other tetrazole-containing manganese aqua complexes.…”

“…(Chen et al, 2001;Huang et al, 1999;Zhang et al, 2001). With the purpose of obtaining phase transition crystals of organic salts, various organic molecules have been studied and a series of new crystal materials have been elaborated (Wang et al, 2002;Xue et al, 2002;Ye et al, 2008). Herewith, we present the synthesis and crystal structure of the title compound, 4-hydroxyanilinium 2-chloroacetate.…”
