An SDN QoE-service for dynamically enhancing the performance of OTT applications

Abstract: This paper provides a brief overview and a vision for introducing a Quality of Experience (QoE) function for on-demand services or for premium users, based-on Software-Defined Networking (SDN). The proposed "QoE-service" can take advantage of the SDN global resource view and complementary QoE metrics to assure the desired performance for OTT applications by adopting traffic management mechanisms. This paper introduces the QoE-Service concept and SDN architecture and it presents a set of use cases that demonstr… Show more

“…This is reflected in literature as well. In [36] the SDN architecture is leveraged in order to introduce a "QoE-service" specifically for OTT providers. This QoE-service takes advantage of network QoS metrics, application QoE metrics or user feedback, and by combining them with the global resource view of the network it enables elastic traffic steering with the objective to enhance the performance of OTT applications or for premium users.…”

“…Although these methods are interesting, they did not cover the adaptive rerouting in such a manner that recovers the current situation of the SDN when faced with link/network congestion. In [10], authors present user aspect overview functions through the SDN architecture by experiencing the desired performances of requests such as suitability and applicability. This holistic architecture has the flavor of useful practical concepts, but it suffers from reliability and availability when faced with link and network congestion.…”

“…Another possibility offered by SDN, is the flexible acquisition of QoE-related information from the network infrastructure, towards the enhancement of QoE for Over-TheTop (OTT) on-demand services or for OTT premium users [19]. Such an approach will be able to unlock additional business value, not only for the OTT providers, but also for the network operators, who by using such a paradigm could enter the revenue loop between OTTs and their customers.…”
