Abstract:The nitrate selectivity of TiO 2 has important consequences for its efficiency as a NOx depollution photocatalyst. Most emphasis is typically given to photocatalyst activity, a measure of the rate at which NOx concentrations are reduced, but a reduction in NOx concentration (mainly NO + NO 2 ) is not necessarily a reduction in atmospheric NO 2 concentration because the catalytic process itself generates NO 2 . With NO 2 being considerably more toxic than NO, more emphasis on nitrate selectivity, a measure of the NOx conversion to nitrate, and how to maximise it, should be given in engineering photocatalytic systems for improved urban air quality. This study, on the importance of adsorbed water in the photocatalytic oxidation of NOx, has identified important correlations which differentiate the role that water plays in the oxidation of NO and NO 2 . This observation is significant and offers insights into controlling nitrate selectivity on TiO 2 and the potential for increased effectiveness in environmental photocatalyst applications.

This study investigated, modelled and simulated the influence of multi-chlorohalogenation in heterogeneous photocatalytic degradation of substituted phenols (pentachlorophenol (PCP), trichlorophenol (TCP), dichlorophenol (DCP), and monochlorophenol (CP)). The LangmuirHinshelwood approach was applied to determine oxidation kinetics. Aquasim 2.0 computational software was used to model, simulate and estimate model parameters of the different chlorophenols. Chemical adsorption equilibrium isotherms for the four chlorophenols and phenol were studied and modelled for adsorption onto titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) semiconductor catalyst. Langmuir adsorption parameters were determined and used to calculate adsorption constant and maximum adsorption capacity. The adsorption of chloride phenolics onto titanium dioxide catalyst increased in the order of 4-CP < DCP < Ph < TCP < PCP. Photocatalytic studies analysed the efficiency of oxidation and found improved degradation with higher chloride substituted phenolics in the order of PCP > TCP > DCP ≥ 4-CP. Photocatalytic parameters were calculated and estimated along with sensitivity and uncertainty analyses.

RESUMOA contaminação de águas por espécies tóxicas ou recalcitrantes gera grandes impactos ambientais. Nesse contexto, os Processos Oxidativos Avançados (POAs), tecnologias que utilizam principalmente o radical hidroxila (HO • ) para a oxidação dos poluentes, têm se destacado como métodos alternativos promissores no tratamento de águas residuais e efluentes industriais. Os POAs têm sido considerados uma estratégia eficaz do ponto de vista técnico, econômico e ambiental para a degradação de poluentes presentes em águas residuais e efluentes industriais, apesar de possuir limitações como alto custo das fontes de energia, desenvolvimento de novos materiais catalíticos de baixo custo e construção de reatores em escala real. Há uma grande relevância na aplicação desses processos em escala industrial mediante a otimização desses fatores de eficácia. Sendo assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar um levantamento bibliográfico sobre os POAs e apresentar dados a respeito da eficiência desses processos na degradação de poluentes, comparando os embasamentos teóricos e a sua aplicação industrial. Diante disso, os fundamentos e aplicações dos principais POAs (químicos, fotoquímicos, eletroquímicos, sonoquímicos, sonoeletroquímico e processos baseados em ozônio), bem como suas vantagens e desvantagens foram descritos nesta revisão da literatura.
